Methylene Blue Injection, a reducing agent of oxidised haemoglobin, transforms the ferric ion (fe+++) back to its oxygen-carrying ferrous state (fe++), which is how methylene blue operates in methemoglobinemia. Methylene Blue, a selective inhibitor of P, is used as an antimalarial drug.

To treat methemoglobinemia, methylene blue reacts with red blood cells to create leukomethylene blue, which reduces oxidised haemoglobin and returns the ferric ion (fe+++) to its oxygen-carrying ferrous state (fe++). Methylene Blue, a particular P inhibitor, is used as an antimalarial medication.

To stop a local high concentration of the substance from forming more methemoglobin, methylene blue (methylene blue) must be administered intravenously very slowly over a period of several minutes. Never go beyond the suggested dosage.
